History and political profile

Stafford was first formed in 1972, when it was won by the Australian Labor Party. This changed in 1974 when the seat went to Terry Gygar of the Liberal Party. Gygar held the seat until 1983, at which point he lost it to Denis Murphy, but after Murphy's death in 1984 Gygar was able to retake the seat in the by-election. Gygar was re-elected in the election of 1986 but lost the seat at the 1989 election to Rod Welford of Labor.[2]

In 1992 the seat was abolished, and Welford moved to Everton. But a redistribution saw the seat recreated in 2001 after Chermside and Kedron were amalgamated. The seat remained in Labor's hands after the 2001, 2004 and 2006 elections.[2]
